As a Prius owner I get a lot of questions about hybrids. Interestingly enough the most common one is if the car needs to be plugged in often. I wish I could plug it in but they are still working on that. Anyway, lots of people like to comment on 60 MPG (city) numbers the EPA listed up until this year. According to some the Prius had an unfair advantage under the old numbers because the test was very outdated - it actually dates back to the 70s and has been largely unchanged until this year.
Anyway, the good folks over at HybridCars.com took a look at the new 2008 EPA MPG numbers. While the MPG for the Prius is no longer 60 according to the EPA tests, it is still the most fuel efficient car sold and hybrids dominate the top 10 highest MPG cars. Every other car on the market also went down in EPA fuel efficiency as a result of the new test, so at the end of the day the hybrids didn’t really fall behind.
EPA numbers aside… if you are willing to get run over by a semi or become a victim of hybrid road rage you can actually get over 100 MPG in a Prius so mileage really does vary.
